the VMA Lip Syncing Turn Off

I was that the MTV music video awards (VMA’s) the other week and I noticed all he singers were lip syncing and that got me thinking- here is Kanye West who calls himself a genius and yet he was using auto tune and a vocoder – which makes any voice sound good.

Am I dreaming or is this all fake?

I think back to the great voices– Billie Holiday, Elvis, Freddie Mercury and try to imagine them using a vocoder.

I hear the echoes of the cheers and chanting Kanye got and my heart cries.

I cry out for authenticity and human imperfection. I cry out for the beauty of a voice reaching for perfection.

I know Justin Beiber and Usher were lip syncing too and they get paid all that money to fool the public. Its really not right!

ew, you're so disingenuous it's disturbing.

An artist don't write off another just because he or she prefers a certain tool. don't be so close minded. It'll open doors for you.

You should re-read your opening sentence.

I agree with you - except in Kanye's case, since he's not a singer. But its not just the artist's fault, its the execs/A&Rs and the public who buy it.

As a fellow artist, I feel like I should stress how important it is to respect individual expression. You choose to express yourself with your voice and you do so quite well. But that doesn't give you the right to say a performing artist cannot use his voice along with other media. Just as I am a hairstylist who chooses to use a certain product or tool to achieve beauty, I don't scope out every other hairstylist and bash their choice of what they choose to use.

I agree with the sentiment. Though I read recently somewhere that you had challenged ms Gaga to a sing off. I can see why it would be good to promote live music. Though did you have to insult her? I'm not her biggest fan but if you want to fight your cause allies are better than enemies. Especially as she's one of the few who does sing live.

I do enjoy your music though

I understand what she means, artificial music, meaningless performance. I would rather listen to a singer who is dying (and also opening his/her heart to me) to get to the right key, at the right time, with the right lyrics. That's what I call a good performer.

I personally think you're right when you say alot of stars like Justin Bieber and Rihanna lip-sync but I also you think you are a FOOL when you challenged Lady Gaga to a live sing-off. Lady Gaga is one of the few stars that CAN sing, and you're just making a fool out of yourself and your career. It's so sad thinking of how you and Lady Gaga could be allies, because you two both have similarities when it comes to your fathers. Listen to her sing the song "Speechless", and you will see that she pours her heart into her performance.

First, "genius" has nothing to do with vocal talent. Kanye West is a wordsmith - he works with rhythm and rhyme.

Second, an artist can legitimately choose to use auto-tune for the very reason that it makes their voice sound electronic and that's the sound they want, because it ties in thematically with what they're communicating in their music, or simply because they like the way it sounds.

Third, "my heart cries"? Seriously? What are you, twelve?

I agree with Marissa - stop trying to sound poetic or something, because it just makes you sound like an angsty teen craving attention and nobody likes that.

I also heard about the Lady Gaga sing-off. And Lady Gaga is one of the few singers who doesn't need autotune to sound amazing. So... I hope you understand what a big mistake this was and that she is going to harvest your vital organs.

Oh Alisa, I do think there is a time when even you may resort to using auto tune, because much of the crowd of listeners today expect a certain vocal perfection. Though i whole heartedly agree with your sentiment you are stupid for talking badly about other singers and writing them off because they use a tool that might save their jobs. No one enjoys a performance when the singer can't stay on tune, even if they are perfectly able to sing. I too also think that you are a fool for challenging Gaga to sing. She is one of the few that can sing, and I am so saddened to see you write her off as "plastic" and "manufactured" by music companies, when you are almost trying to send out the same message to your fans. I think the thing that you need to learn the most is respect for your peers and to be at least kind to other people.

I completely agreed with you. I rather have an artist miss a tune but I know that he/she is singing live. I have never purchased any cd's from bieber, kanye, gaga even britney. They are good entertainers but singers, they lack on that. Perfection can be found within a real voice not a mechanic tool.

Alisa, the sad thing is that I might've been a fan. Your voice is mediocre and annoying sometimes - but Billy was a catchy song. But nooo you had to destroy it with your pretentious personality and your arrogance.

Alisa, even though it has nothing to do with what you said, I have to put my two cents in about this whole sing-off thing. First of all, it was a very very stupid move on your part, because Gaga is one of the few singers out there who can actually sing. In fact, I think she's just as good as you are (if not better). But the thing that really bugged me, why did you have to be so rude about it? There is nothing I hate more than an artist that bashes another artist, REGARDLESS of whether they are right or wrong to do so, and I bet Gaga would NEVER say such mean things about you. I thought you were better than that, but I guess I was wrong, and I've lost a lot of respect for you. I hoped you'd succeed and gain some fame, but after hearing what you said, your head seems big enough, so you my darling do NOT need anything more to fill it with. You should look up Gaga's acoustic stuff, or her song "Speechless." Look up the reason she wrote it, and how much emotion (and how amazing her voice sounds) when she sings it live. & Learn to speak with RESPECT for fellow artists, whether they deserve it or not, because it's what the bigger person would do.
